4/25 - Pookey - Quick update

We got new labs about a month ago. BUN and phosphorus slightly increased, but creatinine actually came down.



We're still really dialed in on hydration. That seems to be going well. He's enjoying a new water bowl I've added next to his favorite chair in my office.

The vet was talking about a product called Porus One. Like a charcoal product you put in their food that supposedly binds to the waste products and they don't digest it. It's interesting but the quick reading I did about it when I got home it does seem relatively new and not a lot of long term research has been done. I'm still considering - would love to hear any experiences with it.

Still eating Fancy Feast classic pates. They are high phosphorus but I figure his phosphorus isn't super alarming right now, and he likes this food better than the others I've tried (I have a massive stock pile now ).

We're planning on checking labs again in July or August. They want to do rabies vaccine in May but I'm going to try to drag that out until our next labs visit.

There is a bit of an explanation on how Porus One works but it looks like it’s relatively new.

Hey Kat! Thanks! I'll check those out. Have you tried the Porus One? I guess In the short term I'm most nervous about putting him off the food or making him constipated.

I haven’t tried it but I think @SqueeM3 tried it recently.

Totally understand not wanting to put him off food. Whenever I have to give a supplement or have to give meds, I use a different food then what Trixie’s usual is to try to avoid food aversion.

Does Pookey get constipated often or easily? Is he on a probiotic?

That's smart, I'm definitely going to start doing that. He goes #2 basically every other day, which seeing others on FDMB does seem a little slow. No probiotic. I'd be interested in trying one though if there aren't any downsides.

Trixie is an every other day girl too. I think that’s normal given that wet food produces a lot less waste. I wouldn’t worry unless you’re seeing him straining when he’s in the box.

I think the only downside to probiotics are cost. The really good ones can be quite expensive, at least here in Canada they are.

Visbiome looks like it gets mentioned a bit on FDMB.

Looks like it provides some support for CKD as well.

Well Leroy gets both Visibiome and Porus One and neither seem to be doing anything Porus One is a gritty charcoal powder you mix into food. Leroy and civvie eat it just fine.
